In partnership with the three Mi'gmaq communities of Quebec - Gesgapegiag, Gespeg and Listuguj - represented by the Mi'gmawei Mawiomi Business Corporation (MMBC), Innergex Renewable Energy is developing the Mesgi'g Ugju's'n 2 wind project. In addition to the existing 150 MW Mesgi'g Ugju's'n (which means "Big Wind" in the Mi'gmaq language) wind farm, this new project will add 102 MW of new wind power capacity.

Location

This project, originating from the Mi'gmaq communities, will be located in the unorganized territory of Rivière-Nouvelle, in the MRC d'Avignon and is part of the Gespe'gewa'gi as defined by the Mi'gmawei Mawiomi Secretariat.

Community Benefits

This 50-50 partnership project will generate benefits for the Mi'gmaq communities. As with the Mesgi'g Ugju's'n project commissioned in 2016, half of the benefits of this second phase will belong to the Mi'gmaq communities through MMBC for community development projects.

In addition, Innergex will make an annual contribution to the MRC d'Avignon and will also set up a social commitment fund. This project will contribute to maintain wind turbine component manufacturing companies established in Gaspésie.

The construction itself will require the creation of 200 jobs, which will have economic spin-offs. Once in operation, the facility will maintain permanent, skilled jobs. Training programs in wind energy will be offered to people from these communities and the region as a priority.

The project

Through various calls for tenders launched in 2021 and 2022, Hydro-Quebec is seeking to increase wind energy capacity in Quebec. The Mesgi'g Ugju's'n 2 project will add up to 24 wind turbines for an installed capacity of up to 102 megawatts. Such a wind facility will produce electricity for the equivalent needs of approximately 20,000 homes. Commercial operation could take place as early as 2026.

On March 15, 2023, Hydro-Québec announced the selection of this project among its request for proposals.
